The largest visual arts museum in Northeast Louisiana is free, almost never crowded, and housed in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most people in Monroe have driven past it on South Grand without stopping.
About Masur Museum of Art
The Masur Museum of Art operates as a partnership between the City of Monroe and the Twin City Art Foundation, in what was originally the Masur family home. The house is historic and the collection is real. Exhibits rotate every two to three months, covering local and regional artists, sculptural and textile work, and occasional shows featuring nationally recognized names. A past collection of Blue Dog paintings by George Rodrigue drew steady attendance. The museum is not enormous, but it surprises people who walk in expecting nothing.
Current and Upcoming Exhibitions (2026)
"Trismegistus: In the Garden" runs through August 8. Next up: "It's Time to Grow Up" opens August 6 through October 17, alongside "Grounds for Departure" (August 20 through October 31). Later in the year, a Bernard Mattox retrospective opens November 19.
Exhibitions rotate every two to three months. Local visitors can return a few times a year and find something different each time. Verify the current shows at masurmuseum.org before your visit.
Art Events and Programs at Masur Museum
The museum runs a consistent calendar of programming beyond the gallery exhibitions. pARTy 318 is a monthly social for young professionals held at the museum. Studio 318 is a patron member program with exclusive events. The annual Off the Wall gala is a fundraiser and social event that regularly sells pieces directly from featured artists. The Crawl, an upcoming evening event on August 6, 2026 from 6 to 9 PM, is worth checking if you want to see the museum in a social setting rather than a quiet gallery one.
Plan Your Visit to Masur Museum
The ground floor is fully wheelchair accessible. There is no elevator to upper floors, which means some exhibitions may only be viewable on the ground level depending on where they are installed. If accessibility matters for your visit, call ahead to ask about the current layout.
Parking is free in the on-site lot. The museum is not crowded on weekday mornings. Saturdays tend to draw more visitors. If you have time for a second stop, Biedenharn Museum & Gardens is ten minutes north on Riverside Drive, with a completely different kind of history.
