Biedenharn Museum & Gardens in Monroe, Louisiana

The Biedenharn Museum & Gardens sits on Riverside Drive in Monroe, a few minutes from downtown, on a property that has been collecting history since 1914. It is not a single museum. It is three things at once: a Coca-Cola museum, a Bible museum, and the restored home of a family that shaped both the soft drink industry and the cultural life of North Louisiana. Most visitors come for the Coke story and leave surprised by everything else.

The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum

Joseph Biedenharn was running a candy shop in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1894 when he decided to bottle Coca-Cola, which at that point was only sold as a fountain drink. He put it in glass bottles and sold them from his store. He was the first person to do this. The Coca-Cola Company later credited him as the original bottler.

In 1913 he moved to Monroe. The Coca-Cola Museum inside the complex tells that story through original equipment, vintage advertising, and artifacts from the early bottling era. The centerpiece is a vintage delivery truck, bright yellow with Coca-Cola livery, the kind that carried bottles to shops across North Louisiana in the early 1900s. At the end of the tour, you can buy a Coke in a glass bottle for a nickel. That detail alone is worth the trip.

Elsong Gardens at the Biedenharn

Behind the museum buildings, formal English gardens spread along the Ouachita River. They are among the most carefully maintained public gardens in North Louisiana. Roses, azaleas, and seasonal plantings fill the beds in structured rows. The garden is open with general admission and is the quietest part of the complex, worth the visit on its own.

The Bible Museum and the Biedenharn Family

The Bible Museum holds one of the more unusual collections in the region: rare Bibles, manuscripts, and religious texts spanning several centuries. Joseph Biedenharn was a serious collector of religious artifacts, and the museum reflects that. It is smaller than the Coca-Cola section but draws its own dedicated visitors, particularly those interested in religious history and rare printed materials.

Joseph Biedenharn's daughter Emy-Lou was an opera singer who performed internationally in the early twentieth century. She gave up her career to return to Monroe and care for the family estate, and she spent the rest of her life preserving it. When she died, she left the property to a foundation. The Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall on the grounds still hosts performances, including the free ULM summer concert series open to the public. The hall carries her name.

Plan for 90 minutes to two hours for the full complex. The gardens alone are worth the shorter admission on a good weather day.

If you can visit in December, do. The property decorates fully for Christmas and several reviewers call it the best version of the museum. The gardens at night during the holiday season are something separate entirely.
