Savage Axe Monroe: Their building has been sold and they must be out by August 2nd. They are clearing inventory with deals all week: $5 drinks, axe throwing specials, and Karaoke Madness on the patio for free. Stop by before they close for a few months. 1812 Tower Dr, Monroe.

Southern Escape Room: Five rooms on Louisville Avenue, two blocks from downtown. Difficulty ranges from a beginner mini game to a room played entirely in the dark. We went in a group of five and picked the vampire room. We used all three hints. Full review and which room to book first: meetmonroe.us

The Trove: We walked into Apero for a wine tasting and discovered a gallery we did not know existed. Local art, plants, exclusive furniture, and at least one gator head if you need something for your wall. Worth going in on its own. Inside Apero, 108 Desiard St.
The teacher was from South Africa. Thirty minutes of Tai Chi, thirty minutes of sound bath, at the Wellness Center on a weekday morning.
We have watched the videos. We have practiced before. None of that is the same as standing in a room with someone who actually teaches it. Tai Chi is gentle until it catches you somewhere you forgot about.
The sound bath came second. We lay down and closed our eyes. At some point we drifted off. We came back when we heard someone snoring nearby and smiled before we could stop ourselves.
The Wellness Center gave us a free day pass on the way out. Still thinking about that room.
Caney Lake is an hour and a half from Monroe, inside Jimmie Davis State Park. Five thousand acres of freshwater. Six of Louisiana's top ten bass records were caught here.
A friend invited us. We swam. We did not stop watching for gators the entire time.
Go anyway.
NELA Arts Council is looking for Culture Bearers. They are identifying people across Region 8 who carry traditions forward: quilters, luthiers, traditional cooks, weavers, festival organizers. "Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, you must know sorrow." Naomi Shihab Nye wrote Kindness on a bus in Colombia. It's about how loss teaches us to be gentle.
